My name is Genevieve Flendt and I am the mother of three gorgeous little boys (aged 12 months, 3 years and 5 years at the time of the exam).Following several years as a Registered Nurse in adult and paediatric acute care at Royal Perth and Princess Margaret Hospitals in Perth I went on to do my child health certificate. Feeling that I had a deficit of breastfeeding related knowledge at the end of the course I went on to train as a Breastfeeding Counsellor through the Australian Breastfeeding Association. I have been volunteering as a Breastfeeding Counsellor for a little bit over three years and really enjoying this role. It is such a rewarding feeling to play a role in helping a mum with breastfeeding difficulties through an often difficult and upsetting time in their new motherhood and to see them come out the other side empowered and smiling, to help a mother establish confidence in her mothering, and to know that I have played a role in helping her precious baby to receive the many wonderful and protective benefits of breastfeeding. I feel privileged to be moving forward as a IBCLC and am looking forward to helping mothers leap over any hurdles in their way and go on to achieve their personal breastfeeding goals. |

My name is Liz McGuire. I was a NMAA (now Australian Breastfeeding Association) breastfeeding counsellor for 10 years before starting work at the Lactation Resource Centre and qualifying as an IBCLC. The Lactation Resource Centre work is less often ‘hands on’ but is still exciting. I love reading the scientific literature and making recent findings available to lactation consultants and other health professionals through the Lactation Resource Centre’s publications and study modules. The experiences of Australian Breastfeeding Association members are also a mine of information and we can help other mothers with breastfeeding by publishing their case studies. I find it personally very satisfying when I am able to contribute case studies to the published literature on breastfeeding. |
